Earl Swift
Journalist Earl Swift has earned a reputation for deeply immersive reporting, vivid storytelling, accuracy, and fairness in a career spanning more than thirty years. As a reporter, columnist, and editor for newspapers in St. Louis, Anchorage, and Norfolk, he tackled subjects ranging from naval deployments to backwoods murder to bridal fashions, and he’s demonstrated similar range in major stories for Outside, Parade, Popular Mechanics, and other magazines. He has written six previous books, including Auto Biography, The Big Roads (a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice), and Where They Lay (a PEN finalist). He has written about the Chesapeake region for thirty years, and has circumnavigated the bay by kayak. Since 2012, Swift has been a residential fellow of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities at the University of Virginia. Swift’s recent story, set in Tangier Island, “The Incredible True Story of the Henrietta C,” appeared in the June 2018 issue of Outside.
